WDAA Gaited Horses and Mules

WELCOME TO THE WDAA GAITED HORSE & MULE PAGE!

Did you know the Western Dressage Association of America (WDAA) is open to all breeds of horses and mules including gaited breeds? Do you want to build a better relationship with your gaited horse or mule and improve your horsemanship skills while in the company of like-minded riders? Then you have come to the right place! Let us help you and your gaited horse or mule get started on your Western Dressage journey together! Come ride with us!

How do I get started in Western Dressage?

  1. First, become a member so you can participate in one of the many programs WDAA offers. Membership also allows you access to the educational videos on the Learning Management System (LMS) and access to the WDAA members-only Social Corral Facebook page. Lean more about WDAA membership here Learn more about the WDAA Horse Lifetime Points and Awards Program (WHLPAP) here.
  2. Next, determine which level bests suits you and your horse. Gaited horses can compete in all levels of WD tests, including freestyles. Learn more about WDAA tests here.
  3. Gaited horses use the same tests as a trotting horse, but substitute the “jog” work with their “intermediate” or “saddle gait”. Learn more about Guidelines for Gaited Horses here.
  4. Several gaited breeds and organizations have become “Breed Alliance Partners” with WDAA. This partnership facilitates the sharing of educational opportunities and promotes the growth of Western Dressage for riders and horses from all backgrounds. Learn more about WDAA Breed Alliances here.
  5. Check out the WDAA Training Wheel to use as your guide throughout your horse’s training. The wheel will help you stay on track as you move up the levels. Learn more about the WDAA Training Wheel here.
  6. Do you want additional help for you and your horse? The WDAA professional member’s directory can help you find someone to assist you or your horse. Many of these instructors offer virtual lessons too. Learn more about the Members Directory here.
  7. See if you live in or near a WDAA state affiliate as they provide local live and virtual Western Dressage shows, events and members’ programs.  While membership in a state affiliate is not a requirement, having the support of a local WD community makes your journey more fun! Learn more about WDAA State Affiliates here.
  8. Finally, go to the WDAA calendar to find a show or event to attend! Do not worry if you cannot find a show in your immediate area. WDAA also recognizes online shows so you can compete from anywhere and get valuable feedback from a USEF licensed Western Dressage Judge all of whom have received training to accurately evaluate your gaited horse or mule. View the WDAA Calendar of Events here.

So what are you waiting for? Take that first step with your gaited horse or mule!

It’s about the journey…
